The Northeast Texas town of Paris, Texas has made headlines for many events and reasons. A rogue movie not filmed in the area, but in El Paso, falsely branded the town for the world to see. The city's red cowboy hat on a small Eiffel Tower is its logo despite its beautiful fountain area in the core of the town. It has five living famous sports figures Raymond E. Berry in football; Gene "Bebes" Stallings in football; Carlton Cooper in basketball; Deon Miner in track; and Eddie Robinson in baseball. Paris Junior College won the national round ball championship in 2006. The town has produced huge and successful bankers and businessmen, such as the late Benton Love of Texas Commerce Bank and Charles "Red" Scott of Pier 1 Imports. Many doctors have emerged from its educational system such as Charles Baxter and Charles Crenshaw, both of whom operated on or were near President John F. Kennedy after he was shot. Education in Paris has sent hundreds out to teach, including Minnie Stevens Piper recipient Joan Mathis and Steve Tallant, president at Texas A&M-Kingsville. The music and movie world has Paris alumni, such as Vanila Ice (Robbie Van Winkle), Craig Armstrong, a producer in Hollywood, and Duane Allen of the Oak Ridge Boys. The town evolved from an army base environment in 1946 to a progressive industrial atmosphere that produced Blockbuster Video shelving, soup, diapers, pastries, soft drinks and light bulb bases, as well as pipes and boilers and parts for Boeing airplanes. Still, incidents, especially in 1893 and 1920, haunt Paris today. The hanging of Henry Smith and the burning of the two Arthur brothers clamped a racist label on Paris that re-emerges with each discussion of rights. The internet is filled with comments on the events. This book attempts to tell the factual history of the two events, which are nasty enough in truth, as well as reveal how the town evolved to a law-abiding citizenship that moved into the 21st century attempting in many ways to form a pathway to success for both Anglo and Black races.

Paris Texas Living With A Bloody Past eBook Skipper Steely Reviews
I borrowed the book thinking it would tell me more about a murder case involving 2 old classmates -- there were maybe 2 sentences about them. The rest was minute details of lynchings that were very hard to follow because in the middle of telling about one there would be details of other crimes committed by people involved in the original story. It was hard to follow. The Edition could use some work because one page was repeated numerous times before you could get to the first page of the book.
For readers interested in the evolution of race relations in the US, this well-written book examines the ghastly 1893 and 1920 mob lynchings in Paris TX and surveys racial violence in the Paris region from pre-civil war times to the present. (Paris TX is northeast of Dallas, population 50,000)
The events surrounding the mob violence, torture and lynchings of African-Americans Henry Smith (1893) and the Arthur brothers (1920) are covered in detail. After being paraded through town, Henry Smith was tortured with hot irons for an hour atop a platform labeled "JUSTICE" before a crowd of ten thousand. In 1920 the Arthur brothers (one a veteran of WWI who had served in France) were lynched, burned, and dragged through African-American neighborhoods. Their sisters were taken to the courthouse and raped by police. A prominent Paris citizen who actively tried to oppose the 1920 mob violence, the minister Bob Shuler, was thereafter "called" to move to Los Angeles, where he became famous. The book describes what happened to the Arthur family after they fled Paris for Chicago.
Also covered are recent controversial events in Paris TX. In 2006, 14-year-old African-American Shaquanda Cotton was sentenced for "up to 7 years" for shoving a hall monitor, who was not injured. In 2008, African-American Brandon McClelland was killed after being run over and dragged 70 feet by a vehicle driven by two white men who were his friends and coworkers. His death sparked nationwide controversy after charges against the white men were dismissed. The book also discusses the impact of widespread illegal drug usage in Paris starting in the seventies and how it has led to incidents of inter-racial violence, more so than racism per se.
Compared to the mob lynchings of 100 years ago, justice in Paris has made substantial progress. For its small size, Paris has fared well economically and socially. Racism persists, however. I have never lived in Paris TX, but it seems to me that the racial tensions that flare up after events like the sentencing of Cotton, and McClelland's death, could be calmed by an understanding of the history described in this book. Historical understanding doesn't bestow justice, but it can reduce the ignorance that inflames racism, violence and fear.
The author is a historian and writer with deep roots in Paris TX. The book is well-researched, with many footnotes and eye-witness accounts. His writing is straight-forward, engaging and thought provoking. I recommend the book as a case study for community and church discussion groups, reading clubs, educators and journalists, and also to genealogists with family connections to the Paris TX region. When I discovered in the book that one of my ancestors attended the Arthur lynchings, the author responded quickly via email to my questions. This book is a sincere effort to document the long and bloody history of racial violence in the author's home town.
Liked the e-book very much. The author, Skipper Steely, is from my hometown. He is a very good writer of history.
This book is poorly written and very hard to follow. It is like following a drunk around for hours and not getting anywhere.
