A young man in the California gold rush, on a mission to deliver supplies by mule train to the new miners in the rugged Yuba River Valley, must go after ruthless bounty hunters who kidnapped the party’s Chinese cook with the intention of returning him to the cruel whaleboat captain from whose ship the cook fled when it docked in San Francisco. After getting information in the new boom town of Nevada City, the young man realizes he must catch the kidnappers before they reach the port of Marysville and leave on a steamboat never to be seen again.

This is the first book I’ve read by John Rose Putnam, but it certainly won’t be the last. The Yuba Trouble is a simple story of a less complicated time and it did what a good book should – it took me out of the present and gave me an adventure into another time and place. It takes place in the mid-1800's during the California Gold Rush. I found it especially enjoyed the locale because my family is from that part of the state. I had no trouble envisioning the scenery the characters fought their way through life and death struggles in their frenzied pursuit for gold. The protagonist, Tom Marsh, has a refreshing perspective; his concerns are so different in most ways than ours today. What shines through is his sense of duty, his allegiance with the underdogs, and his longing to be with the girl he loves. It’s a satisfying tale in every way, told in a believable fashion. I’m looking forward to reading more adventures by this author.

The Yuba Trouble A Tom Marsh Adventure Book 3 edition by John Rose Putnam Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I have read all 3 of the Tom Marsh books and enjoyed them all. Well written and hard to put them down. I hope there will be a 4th.
Excellent book. I have bought every one and thoroughly enjoyed all of them. I would highly recommend each of them. The author is an excellent writer and each will keep you in suspense.
Very well-developed charactors, fast paced story. the people are so real! Great story of the early gold rush days! You feel as if you know the main people in the story. Thank you,John Rose Putnam for a great read! Thank you,!
This series has been excellent the third book does not disappoint. When Tom Marsh tries to open a new route to supply miners in the area, some of his men are taken by bounty hunters. It is up to Tom to get his men back and deal with the men who took them. The author captures the flavor of the time period. The book moves a good pace that keeps you interested. I highly recommend this book for fans of the western genre.
"The Yuba Trouble" grabbed me with the first chapter and didn't let go. Wonderfully descriptive; I could almost smell the pine trees and hear the river rushing. The characters are well fleshed out and the action kept the scenes moving along at a good clip. I especially liked Tom Marsh's attempts to write a letter to his sweetheart Lacey as the plot progressed. I'm familiar with John's writing through attending the same critique group. A nice addition to my enjoyment is "hearing" John read along with me. I've read another novel of his, "River of Corn," (in one sitting) and highly recommend it. This is the first Tom Marsh book I've read. Though the third book in the series, it stands alone as a satisfying read. Now to read the rest and any future books in the series!
I’ve read my share of American westerns through the decades, and “The Yuba Trouble” ranks with the best of them. In the 3rd novel of the Tom March Adventure series, we once again join Tom as he works hard during the California gold rush to earn enough honest money to reunite with the young woman he loves and offer her the lifestyle and security he wants for her. Earning that money isn’t easy, and it doesn’t help that Tom’s code-of-honor gets in the way and he has to risk his life to save a black slave on the run from an evil southern slave owner and a young Chinese cook called Joe who was sold into slavery by his poor, starving parents to the cruel captain of a whaling ship.
I love westerns and this is a good one though not as well presented as the first of the Tom Marsh books I read. I was surprised to find a lot of editing errors, especially in the first half of the book. Even with those errors, which I found somewhat distracting as a result of my remembrance of how well presented the other book was, I thoroughly enjoyed the story, the characters and the twists and turns of the book. My brother lives in modern day Grass Valley and my Grandfather, Al Rourke, and his mother, lived near the Yuba River outside of Grass Valley. I have been in the areas which are described by the author in detail and I enjoyed the book more because of my connections. A good read overall, certainly good enough for me to give it a five star rating.
